Keeping Utility Honest

As a solar installer, every system receives a Sense + Solar. This allows me to help the customer understand their electrical usage better. At one installation, National Grid replaced the outdoor meter, but was not recording the meter reading, and used ‘estimated’ readings for the usage… for 3 months.

The since Massachusetts has full net meter (i.e. solar production credit is 1:1 usage), and the totals in Sense showed that the solar production was more than consumption, it was an easy discussion with National Grid to not charge the customer any of the estimated usage and to have the meter replaced immediately.

Using the data from Sense, it gave us the data to support our position to push back on National Grid to zero bill. Without that data, there would be no standing for the customer, and ultimately the customer would have had to pay $900.
